So, when hiking on old railroad grades I often find old railroad spikes, tie plates, rail joiners, etc.
I usually will take a photo and put it alongside the trail. There are a few spots where I go quite often where I have collected quite a few items and put them in piles along the grade.
In a few spots like near Franklin Junction there are ties with spikes in them still in place right where they were when the rails were torn up in the early 50s, I leave those right there.
but If it's just in the middle of the trail is it okay to take them?
If so I would probably label them so that I can remember where they came from.
