Springs of California by Gerald A. Waring, United States Geological Survey, 1915
In this era, hot springs were one of the few effective ways to get any relief from arthritis. My great-aunt Agnes Dahlstrom, who developed arthritis in her mid-30s, visited hot springs several times per year for many decades. Rural hot springs resorts usually had small rustic cabins, good food in the dining hall, and various simple outdoorsy activities (hiking, blackberry picking, wildflower picking, etc), plus hot springs, natural mineral water drinks, and hot soaking pools.
The Roman Spa Hot Springs Resort in Calistoga, CA is still a popular family resort of the old-country type. You'll hear many different northern and eastern European languages spoken there.
The hot sulfur springs offered some relief to folks with skin diseases and other skin afflictions.
