Here is the builder photo of Sumpter Valley Ry. #16. It was the first of a series of 3 mikados bought new by the SVRy. #16 and sister #17 were built in 1915, with #18 coming the following year. Here are specs: 42" drivers, 17"x22" cylinders, 95,000 lbs. on drivers, engine light weight 110,400 lbs., tender light weight 31,511 lbs., working pressure 180 lbs., 23,137 lbs. of tractive effort, tender capacity 4000 gallons of water and 6 1/2 cords of wood, Baldwin builder number was 42,073, buit May of 1915, out of service Jan. 1, 1943 and value on the SVRy books was 12,955.43. #16 was basically an SVRy freight hawg. However, it is surprising to note that the last passenger run on July 31, 1937 was pulled by #16. I can only speculate that this train might have been run as a mixed needing more power than 4-6-0 #50 could offer. #16 was sold to the government of Peru in 1945 and operated for many more years in South America presumably scrapped in the late 1960's or into the 1970's. The scan is from a framed builder photo that hung in the SVRy South Baker office and was donated to SVRR by SVRy's last superintendent Floyd Carpenter. The framed photo is presently on loan to the Baker Heritage Museum.
