This shot is of an international traveler. Sumpter Valley 2nd #15 was built for the Alberta Ry. & Coal Co. as their #7. Alberta Ry. & Coal Co.'s 3' gauge railroad was built from Lethbridge, Alberta to the US border where it connected to the Great Falls & Canada Railway in the US. The 3' gauge operation was converted to std. gauge in 1901. #7 found its way south of the border to the Eureka and Palisade in 1910, but was not used. In 1912, it was part of a trade with the Sumpter Valley Ry. becoming 2nd #15. At some point #15 seen in this photo became the designated Baker switch engine and was equipped with a dual gauge coupling system. Around 1920 it was set aside with 2nd #14 taking its place. #14 had also come from Eureka & Palisade. #15 was one of the engines caught in the Jan. 1921 round house fire and was formally retired. I suspect this photo might have been taken after the engine had been repainted an any needed repairs accomplished before going into service in 1912. The 3rd employee back from the pilot beam is William A. Roundy and is the only one I have an identification for. Mr. Roundy did his machinist apprenticeship with the Sumpter Valley, worked for them for quite a few years both in the shop and engine service. He later went on to be the master mechanic for at least 3 different logging railroad operations. The scan is from the SVRR Archive.
