On June 1, 1966, Steve Patterson, John Charles, and I hiked to a rock outcrop overlooking the Whiplash, and watched 498 and mid-train helper 488 working a heavy freight up the grade. I always remembered this spot and this year I came back to see the Eureka and Glenbrook climb the same grade. Only this time my companion was Jack the Golden Doodle.
In 1966 the countryside around the Whiplash was still quite open, and it was possible to see a long train in it's entirety
That is no longer the case 55 years later. A lot of trees have grown up, and some sections of the Whiplash only allow glimpses of short trains
