Safest? Defined how?

When I was a kid, back in the Atomic Age, [let's say 1966-1980, when I was 5 - 19] and we went on vacation my folks never (AFAIR) stopped at any fast food places. When we stopped for the night Dad would ask the motel clerks for recommendations of local places to eat and that was where we'd go for Dinner and Breakfast. Lunch was always stopping somewhere and having a picnic.[1] I don't recall any problems, altho rarely some of the food was less than stellar quality.
We also avoided big chain motels btw, all of which probably says something about Dads view of the world.

I followed the same policies with my kid when we traveled by car. [exception: I often used Motel 6 in places where the plans included much stopping & hiking 'cause I could come in late (like after dark, in summer) and they'd have held my reservation.]

I suppose Fast Food places, and big chains motels too, are reassuring if you're looking for no surprises, but gods above they are boring! Everything the same. It always boggles my mind when I hear of Americans going to some other country and only eating/staying at American Chain places there. Why bother traveling if you're just going to do things the same as at home?

Another note: When I was in High School my friends and I avoided the local (Ames, Iowa) McDonalds when going out for lunch because we had observed that peers who started working there quickly developed massive problems with zits. Since the same was not true of those who got jobs at other fast food chains, we assumed this said something about the food served.

[1] Treasured memory: One time in the mid 1970's, while picnicing on Wilkerson Pass (US 24) in Colorado, Dad was saying something, waving his hand for emphasis, when one of the local ground squirrels (which we were forbidden to feed by parental edict) jumped up and stole the potato chip out of his hand. The look on his face was priceless.
