An interesting quote in this older article about the demolish/rebuild of the Cortez NM McDonalds:
Quote
Franchise owners are required to rebuild their locations every 40 years, but Bronson decided to rebuild the Cortez location about six years early.

That article mentions that (at that time) there was common ownership of the Cortez & Durango franchises.
One thing to keep in mind is that in many areas, Covid [at times] shut down indoor dining areas [and likely indoor 'counter pickup' as well], so drive-thru or delivery were the only options for continuing to do business. I suspect that lesson means that there is a strong push to reconfigure buildings / sites to maximize drive-thru speed & efficiency. Whether that means dual windows or even dual lanes, fast food restaurants with faster drive-thru service are more likely to be long-term winners in the marketplace.
