We were walking in a desert natural area and signs said stay away from the cute prairie dogs due to bubonic plague. What? There was a TV special on it just a week or two ago. You don’t get it from rodents, but by being bitten by the fleas they carry.
It first arose in Africa then Europe 1346-1353 [
en.m.wikipedia.org], then surfaced again three centuries later in London England 1665/66 [
en.m.wikipedia.org]. And it’s still never gone away - just mutating to less virulent strains then back again to a killer. A man I think in Oregon recently got it when touching a flea-ridden mouse his cat had caught. Not pretty.
Stay away from flea harbouring rodents,
Ralph
