The east side of the line is certainly better for avoiding people and traffic. I'd avoid chasing straight out of Antonito. Lots of dust and likely more people. Big Horn is a nice place to watch, as you can hear the train(s) a long way off, then watch them climb the lower parts of the Whiplash...and then watch them approach and pass Big Horn. Access is pretty easy high-ish clearance 2WD if it isn't wet and muddy. Be cautious out there as it can be very dusty and the road is right next to the ROW. The dust can ruin possible photo lines and make the train ride unpleasant for patrons.

There is a small section of line to view from the road crossing near MP 302.5, then of course there is good watching at the big curve at MP 305.

If you are going to go to Sublette, consider parking up above on the ridge and hiking down to keep your vehicle out of photos and to help prevent crowding.

Between Sublette and Osier there are minimal places to watch the trains. At a couple of the pullouts along the road that overlook the canyon, you get a decent view way down into the Calico Cut and Phantom Curve areas.

Then, of course, there is Osier and a delicious meal to go along with train watching. ALL of the roads out there get really bad when wet, so keep an eye on the weather and be prudent.

I wouldn't be bashful about taking some photos. This is an event put on by the railroad and it is sold out - so they are making their money and the trains will run. And they are running across nearly 64 miles of public lands with public access. It's like the daily passenger trains in that regard...do you donate for every photo of the daily trains you take? The situation is certainly a bit different with charters. See my response in this thread about making donations: if there is a way to do so it is a kind gesture and will likely be appreciated.
