Spencer Penrose who made huge money in Cripple Creek and then even bigger money by helping to finance Utah Copper (Kennecott) once offered to buy the Antlers in downtown Colorado Springs and was turned down (1916) so he bought the remains of the old Broadmoor Casino and built the current Broadmoor Hotel. We used to have company functions there and our company president was a friend of both Penrose and Bert Carleton, and knew both of their widows, who lived at the Broadmoor. If you go to the downstairs bar area, you go through the Penrose wine cellar, which consists totally of empty bottles in uncounted numbers. Penrose drank every single one during his lifetime... Not bad for the kid who was considered the "no account kid brother" to Senator Boies Penrose, and Richard Alexander Fullerton Penrose Jr. (who was the foremost geologist of his time and one of the founders of the Geological Society of America).
