I've told this story here before but it's been a few years so ...
Back in the last year of the 20th century I took my (then) 13 yr old daughter on the D&S (we'd ridden the CATS the previous year). At some point West of Tacoma I went up to the concession car to get a cup of coffee. while I was up there I heard a woman holding forth that "The scenery is lovely but why don't they have a nice, clean diesel engine instead of that stinky old steam engine?" (best I can remember) I made some kind of remark about it being "A Ride to Yesterday" (the old D&RGW slogan from the 1960's) and she just sniffed at me and gave me the cold shoulder.

ps Comparing 2000 to 1999 my daughter said the D&S had better scenery but the CATS was more fun. She also much preferred Chama to Durango.
