Great photo and thanks for posting it. The NG Toronto Grey & Bruce used these from its start in 1870. We found a great photo that included one and Rod Clarke did a drawing of it for the supplement to his “Narrow Gauge Through The Bush” book. The switchstand frame was stout wood. The one in your photo doesn’t seem to have the same kind of bulk, so I gather it was iron/steel?

Interestingly the Huntsville & Lake of Bays in Ontario used these right to the end in the early 1960s. One still exists today at the reincarnated railway in Huntsville, altho it’s not in use. Author Peter Foley has a drawing in his “The Portage Railway” book.
