I am probably naive but Steven Speilberg restored the locomotive William Mason for "The Wild Wild West" which was an age appropriate engine for the movie. For that movie I didn't think it was that critical because it was a comedy. But because he did that it was able to be used in the Civil War film, "Gods and Generals" which I really appreciated.
