Jerry, thanks as always for keeping us posted on the goings-on with the narrow gauge -
I knew it - that M5 does sound amazing, one of the legendary airhorns, and now we can hear it echoing through the canyon! We had the good fortune to visit Skagway, Alaska about ten years ago on a cruise and saw those engines in use, now we need to make another pilgrimage to Durango to catch them again once they whole group is up and running.
Don't get me wrong, nothing will replace coal smoke and K locomotives, but the sounds of McIntosh & Seymour burbling inside an Alco diesel punctuated by a Nathan M5 is quite a treat for us Alcohaulics.... I am too young to remember any Alco diesels in use on the US Class 1 railroads but now that they are becoming part of the Colorado narrow gauge history I am very happy to hear it. Interesting that Durango now has added another diesel locomotive maker to the stable of locomotives to maintain, Those switchers have unique diesels in them, and the new (?) maroon and gold units probably have rebuilt EMD power assemblies in them, now the Alco power.... Durango continues to prove that it has all sorts of maintenance knowledge!
