MU between differing Makers has been standardised since the beginning of the 1970's, prior to that different MU receptacles were used, currently the 27-Pin is standard, there are some variations in the wiring of that specifically to certain Railroads and Locomotive orders for such for controlling accessories in consists.
Our NZR 1979 DF (GMD GL22MC) had one build order with dual MU receptacles and 4-pipe(vs conventional 3) to allow operation with existing English Electric loco's.
Outside of that, there should be no reason that the new Pup's could not control a MLW in multiple, unless this manufacturer has messed up. It would be incredibly short-sighted to build new units with incompatible or custom MU given these may very well end up somewhere else in their lives.
Fun fact: if you know your wiring schematic, it is possible to lift the lid and jump certain pin numbers that will then cause the unit(s) to "do things"
My favourite trick was to put the unit(s) into notch 8 while "someone" was having a sleep in the cab, at 0300-ish.... while I stood on the cowcatcher steps out of sight. Freaky stuff!
.PC disclaimer. You can't release the air from the jumpercable socket in case someone is thinking of being irresponsible, shenanigans was part of the job...once.
