I took my wife t be on her 1st train trip (D&SNG, January '83) when she was 18, her first standard gauge trip (last RGZ. eastbound) and Amtrak miles I don't plan to count (could, I've got the ticket stubs) over the next 16 years. I don't think she has been on an Amtrak train since we split in '99. OTOH she took her 3rd long-time live-in boyfriend (the one she was smart enough NOT to marry) to Durango to ride the Silverton (from Oregon) while she was with him about 10-12 years ago.
Our offspring first rode Amtrak at age 3 months (Aug-Sep '87) and had ridden over 100,000 miles by age 18, the last time I counted it. Andi has ridden the Silverton, the CATS (favorite) and even the B&SV in Iowa. I don't think any rides on tourist trains since age 18 but going by train remains Andi's preferred, time permitting, mode of long distance travel at age 33.
Go figure.
