For some people it is beyond repair if repair means replacing some arbitrary percentage of the historic fabric. Others will tell you all you need is lots of $$$ and any steam engine can be repaired.
In the case of the D&S, I'd expect the phrase should be "beyond *economic* repair". IE: It would cost more to rebuild it than it could ever make back in profit. But that's just me.
