The CPR had massive wood trestles like this one right across Canada. I think they were self-supporting on the original timbers until all the new fill settled with time, and then it would be topped up occasionally. There was a big 1880s wood trestle near me that’s been filled in for well more than 100 years. The issue more recently is that the original timbers have slowly rotted away, and the roadbed continually settles for that reason.
As to Georgetown Loop, I had thought that all the original fills still existed. We walked a lot of the grade in 1969 before any track was relaid, and that’s my recollection. But from what you ask I gather there were areas where they had to place new fill as well.
