I agree, they look like curtain rod brackets, but that doesn't make sense in this context.

The car appears to be one of the original B&SR coaches, number 15 or 16, built in 1882 by Laconia. Both went to Edaville and are now in the Maine NG collection, with 16 'Mt. Pleasant' currently at the WW&F. I would be interested to know if there is any evidence of these rings in either car today.
