Casey,
good point, not only those but additionally way more strength in the overall cab design.
In the picture of #5500 I posted, the outline of the 1970 collision post is imprinted on the sheetmetal of the nose, one of those posts was ripped up from the Frame.
With that in mind NZR designed the mid-80's built 25Kva Electrics to have Cab corner posts of heavy box section compared with the GE and GM's of the past. Those new DL's from China are even heavier in the cab structural members resulting in a decrease in windscreen size and visibility.
However it's also a case of what you hit, how you hit it and how hard the hit is, as to survivability. Two of the EF's have been written off after hitting a slip or washout, the lead loco filling the cab with mud crushing the ED. That episode was very hard hit, 50mph, 1800 tonne train, stopped dead in 40 metres. No window glass will hold back that force.
