Given the steepness of the grade, and likely the lower quality of track than we see today, it's not difficult to understand why the crews of the smaller Forneys had to "double the hill" on the southbound runs to Wiscasset. I wonder if the 9 could have taken yesterday's big train from TOM to Alna Center by herself. I suspect she could have, but she probably would have used a lot of water in the process.
Stewart, was Head Tide the last opportunity to get water running south to Wiscasset?
