The Sunday morning run crossing over BIA-21 halfway between Kaibeto and Tonalea:
Pretty typical scenery on the mine end of the line - a hot, dry plain with lots of pinon and tough grasses. And one sleepy rattlesnake lounging in the shade under a pinon that I annoyed here...
The returning train approaching Kaibeto in the afternoon:
Many of these guys have worked for the Salt River Project and NGS for most of their working lives. It's really an end of an era for them. I understand SRP is very good about retraining folks and finding them new positions, but it will still be a major disruption in their lives that will likely uproot them and take them hundreds of miles away. Lots of friends and family of employees were out along the tracks to see the last runs.
That's a wrap, folks. The tracks are staying for now, but my understanding is that scrapping on the overhead and the equipment is supposed to start in the next week or two. The Navajo Generating Station will run for another month or two (my understanding is they have about 6-7 weeks of coal in the pile) and then itself be shut off and scrapped.
