The NZR was also very active in experimenting with alternatives to Steam Passenger service as early as the start of WW1.
Here is the earliest Railcar R.M.1 built in 1914, a Westinghouse Petrol-Electric, the Body being built here in the NZR Petone Shops. The Frame and Transmission was supplied by Westinghouse, Great Britain.
