#40 arrives

June 23, 2000 07:11AM
Yesterday at about 8:00 PM (three and a half hours before sunset) Georgetown Loop #40 safely arrived here in Skagway Alaska after a 7 day trip by highway through Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Alberta, British Columbia, and alaska. The loaded truck carring the locomotive was 105 feet long, 15 feet 2 inches high, and weighed 154,000 pounds. It was the largest load ever moved over the Alaska highway.
#40 will be used here on the White Pass & Yukon to help celebrate our golden spike centenial July 29, 2000. For the next 5 years it will pull trains here on the WP&YR before returning to Colorado.
The locomotive was restored by the mechanical dept. men at the Georgetown Loop: Phil Johnson, Mike Horner, Bob Woodring, Dan Holmes, John Hammond, Josh Levine, Steve Flemmer, Steve Peck, Gary Easterling, and Jack Campbell. Thank you all.
