As far as the long/short URL feature that you are asking about, I believe the "automatic" part of that is a feature of
Phorum, the software that the NGDF forum is using. I think it is a part of the
Editor Tools module of Phorum. Note that it is very similar to how BBCode allows a user to mask a link URL. For example, a
BBCode help page on this feature can be viewed by clicking that previous underlined "BBCode" text, which I used as a practical example of URL masking.
You can use the BBCode examples shown on that page in your posts at the NGDF. Note that many of those features are available by using the Message Editor "buttons", but using the buttons is not required if you just type the appropriate code instead.
