The new book is The Birth of California Narrow Gauge, A Regional Study of the technology of Thomas and Martin Carter by Bruce MacGregor. It is to be published by Stanford University late this year. Bruce has finished the text, and is now finishing the illistrations. It will tell the story of the first years of narrow gauge in the Golden State, including sections on the Monterey and Salinas Valley Railroad, The Santa Cruz Railroad, The Santa Cruz and Felton, the North Pacific Coast, The Nevada County Narrow Gauge and the Santa Clara Valley. For those of you not familiar with California's narrow gauge history, the Carter Brothers were railroad car builder, operating in Northern California from 1874 to 1902. Durring this time they built somewere between 5,000 and 10,000 cars, mostly narrow gauge. Today seveal of their passenger cars are still in service on the White Pass, and 16 of their cable cars still see use in San Francisco.
