Yes that is possible. It is my understanding that the D&S has rather strict rules about using both systems at the same time.
It would be very simple to use the straight air system as the retainer to hold cylinder pressure as long as you wanted to recharge the auxiliaries.
Another thing you could do is use it to graduate the release of the automatic set when bringing the train to a stop.
Lots of possibilities for use there and also lots of ways to mess things up.
