I was under the impression, from my old days working at Disney, that the crosshead pumps were the idea of Disney management. I know that they were retrofitted with pre-heaters to increase fuel economy.
Only one or two of the people who worked there during my time understood steam. The rest were quite literally "ride operators" at best. The worst part is the standard that is assumed by so many other theme and amusement parks who follow Disney operating examples or are inspired by theme choices without understanding the angle. Disney knew steam, but that's lost to translation.
