Great trip report. It shows a lot of places on my bucket list. Now about those leaky Russian diesels, the TU-2. I had a chance to spend some time with the TU2-104 a couple of years ago. They are really a work of art considering that they are only 750mm gauge and are D-E. They also were know to be easy to break, and hard to fix.
