As noted previously, the adjusted images had fringe elements associated with them, which
didn't show in the low-res copies posted above. These MAY have been present in the 48-
bit scan file before it was saved, and were clearly present after adjusting the image using
Elements "Camera Raw" capability. Here is a full-size pixel-for-pixel crop of one of the
two really bad areas
:
The same area after more than an hour of careful masking and cloning; not perfect, but IMHO way better than before
:
You can probably see that the black areas with red noise were also masked off (with 25 pixels of feathering) and the shadows then color corrected with a heavy dose of 'decrease red'.
The front of the engine was even worse, and being more complex took a lot of tedious masking and cloning to get even halfway decent
:
Here's the end result - at about 1/6 the resolution of the original scan - and mellowed out with a bit of desaturation
:
I don't know if it was worth two weeks of trial-and-error effort, but I'm going to open a
GRAMPS 'Chromo Crude' Triple Chocolate Stout and call it a day! THANK YOU Jim, John, Michael and Scott for hanging in there with me!!
