Right at the summit of Sluice Hill, the ROW is crossed by a small mountain stream, known historically as "Sluice Hill Cascade", which tumbles down to the Orbeton Stream in the valley below.
Not coincidentally, this is also the point where the Appalachian Trail crosses the SR&RL. I understand that the Maine section of the trail was blazed in the late 1930s, just a few years after the railroad's demise.
Past the summit, the grade levels off or even dips slightly. I continued north to the site of the Orbeton Stream bridge.
Though I had been told to expect to see at least one abutment still in place, there was nothing of the kind. The whole structure appears to have been swept away in one of the floods of recent years.
I stopped for lunch at the Orbeton Stream but went no further, because the owners of Redington have made it clear to curious railfans in the past that trespassers are not welcome.
