Yes. These engines were delivered in 1944 in black. A couple years later some were painted in a two-tone gray livery, sometimes called greyhound(Grayhound??) paint. This was around 1946 I believe. Not sure if 844 was one of those engines painted that color, but they had coaches that color for awhile.
But later during the end of regular service they were all black. 844 finished in freight service, was held for snow melting service in Council Bluffs(melt switches in yards), and was never actually retired from the UP roster. It ran in excursion service in black and silver trim livery until 1987 when they put it in the two-tone gray livery until the mid-1990's, when it was returned to black.
