I have seen pictures of the crew on 268 filling the tender from a creek on the Gunnison line i believe, using a gas powered portable pump that was mounted behind the tender tank.

I doubt the D&RGW wanted to waste any money on the NG by updating any facilities with wells or any other type of water source as bad as they wanted to be rid of it.
