Hello, again -
Several times during the years 1965-1968 Ernie and one or more of his fellow fans followed a freight west all the way from Alamosa to Farmington, and the eastbound return a few days or a week later.
Ernie took lots of B&W photos of these trips; several Alamosa-Chama portions of them are featured in
'Rio Grande Narrow Gauge - The Final Years, Alamosa to Chama', which he co-authored with Joseph P. Hereford, Jr. Fortunately, Ernie also took thousands of color slides; he has more than 30 tin boxes of them, and each box holds 300 photos
. . .
Here we're looking almost straight down on the westbound freight of October 3, 1967, as it makes its way through Monero Canyon
:
. . . and crosses the trestle over Monero Creek
:
Helper #498, running light to Gato, passes through scenic Downtown Monero
:
Here the train of 10/03/67 crosses Highway 64 as it exits the west end of Monero Canyon

Just over three years later, the Narrow Gauge was coming back to life! Here's Ernie filling #483's tank at Lava Loop on October 17, 1970. This was one of several trains moving equipment from Antonito to Chama which were operated by the early volunteers during the Fall of 1970; I had worked as a brakeman on the eastbound train the previous day (see [
ngdiscussion.net].)
That's all for now!
