Great photos. Anyone who tends to think of the Durango & Silverton or the Cumbres & Toltec as glorified amusement park rides only need to look at these photos to see that--despite these railroads' function of hauling tourists--operating these railroads is still dead-serious mountain railroading, just as it has been since they were built. Bulldozers and track hoes may have replaced steam ditchers and manual labor, but the basic challenges of maintaining operations in a difficult mountain environment has not changed. Part of the marvel of these railroads still operating in the 21st Century is just that--mountain railroading is still mountain railroading, and being able to ride a steam-powered narrow-gauge train in that relatively unchanged mountain environment is an experience available few other places in the world.
