Three Months Ago Today II - 08/28/10 (pics)

Giving credit where credit is due -

One thing that the previous P.R. manager of the railroad did right last summer was to schedule
a "working freight" photo excursion.  IIRC, this was originally intended to be a re-creation of the
"Extra 483 East / West" trips of September & October 1970, when the 99.44% volunteer crews
were moving the C&TS cars & locomotives from Antonito to Chama. The fire at Lobato precluded
using 'The Scarlet Harlot', engine "#483", for this excursion but 'The Painted Lady', #489, made a
colorful substitute.   (Thanks to Bill Scobie for his help in removing all that soot to reveal #489's
proper jacket color!)

At our first run-by, I was so far off to the end of the photo line that about all I could see as the train approached was the backsides of my fellow foamers photographers.     ("Patches? We don' need no stinkin' patches!"):


At least I got a good shot of the backside of #489:


... and of her frontside as she let off a little steam coming around the Cumbres Loop (aka 'Tanglefoot Curve'):


Two of the finest people I've ever met!   Where would 'The Friends' and the C&TS be without Craig McMullen and Alan Loomis?


I finally got a fairly good shot of 'The Whole Enchilada' at the trestle just east of Los Piños siding:
