NNG: Stock Cars at SLRG facility in Alamosa - DRGW?

July 24, 2021 10:07PM
Hello,

While staying in Alamosa before my 168 ride tomorrow, I spent some time looking at the SLRG facilities on the south end of town. Outside of the building east of the depot and inside the existing wye (sorry, not sure of it’s official title), there are 3 standard gauge stock cars being used as storage sheds. Next to them is the frame of a fourth car, upside down in the weeds. There is also a fifth car sitting on blocks directly south, near the tail of the wye.

Most of the cars appear to be steel underframe cars with steel ends and bracing, and most have remnants of black paint and D&RGW lettering. I couldn’t make out any numbers. The lone frame has D&RGRR ACF E cast into one of the metal bolsters, but also has wooden beams and no trace of any paint.

Did the Rio Grande paint it’s standard gauge stock cars black like the narrow gauge ones? Does anyone know the history of these cars?

I would like to think they are actually Rio Grande cars, but they may just be repaints given their location.

Any information would help, Thanks!!

Peter
