Today's hike was the Molas Trail which descends over 2,100 feet from US 550 down to the Animas River just north of Elk Park in about four miles. Reached the bottom in time to cross the river on the Colorado Trail footbridge and then hike 3/4's of a mile to Elk Park. In this picture you can see the beginning of the Elk Park siding, while the wye is in the clearing just above the train. The clean stacks don't do justice to the stack music that filled the canyon as they passed.
After the train's passage it was time for lunch along the river and then the return up the trail. We call this a credit card hike because you pay later.
An easier way to reach this site would have been to take the diesel train which stops at the wye. But that would have been cheating.
