Paying (some of) your taxes to the C&TS, et al, instead of the Feds . . . thumbs upthumbs up

Well, sort of -

Prompted by John Cole's post regarding the purchase of season passes to support the C&TS, I was about to call the railroad's ticket office when the following occurred to me:  The C&TS, as a state-owned enterprise, is eligible to receive Tax Deductible donations.  I therefor suggest that those of us who itemize deductions on our tax returns consider the following, and make a $250 tax-deductible donation to the C&TS instead of purchasing a $200 Season Pass.   $250, deducted from my income, is $250 on which I am not paying a (roughly) 30% federal tax – that's $75 dollars that I won't be "donating" to Uncle Sam.  It's also $250 on which I won't be paying a (roughly) 10% state income tax here in California – another $25 that stays in my own bank account.  The net result is $250 instead of $200 going to the C&TS, and only $150 coming out of my account — a win-win for both me and the railroad, and an "up yours" to the California Franchise Tax Board and the Infernal Revenue Service.     smileys with beer

p.s.  Unfortunately this doesn't also apply to the Durango & Silverton, which is a privately-owned for-profit enterprise, but it does apply to other non-profit operations — such as our friends in Como, Georgianatown & Golden, CO; Independence, CA; and in Maine and Pennsylvania, etc., etc.
