Sounds like you would have to send the Canary in to do the lubrication also.
Somewhere up above Russ mentioned that Walshaerts combined with slide valves was not very common. Probably so, but just for what it's worth SVRy Mike's 16,17 and 18 along with 10 wheeler 50 all had Walshaerts with slide valves. I have attached a builders photo of 16.
NNG. Also there was some discussion in this thread about piston valve conversions and how they are outside admission. I am attaching a photo of an engine in a park that I am fond of that has a "Franklin Universal Valve Chest" which I assume is a piston valve conversion and Stephenson valve gear. In photos taken before the engine was superheated and the conversion applied the steam pipe to the valve chest did not come out of the side of the smokebox. I presume that before the engine was superheated, steam from the drypipe split in the smokebox and went into the cylinder saddle through passages to each valve chest. Does the conversion on this engine with the steam delivery coming down to the new valve chests on the outside result in inside admission for the piston valves, or would they still be outside admission? Notice in the photo how the valve stems have been bent with an offset to adjust to the height of the valve stem in the new valve chests. Photo from before the conversion do not show the offset.
Someone contradicted me on another board about this being a piston valve conversion one time. I did not argue with the person, but I'd appreciate if one of the experts on this board would tell me if I am right or wrong. It seems to me that the 40 and 93 at Nev. Northern have the same conversions?
