A famous example is "Dolgoch" on the Talyllyn Railway in Wales. This has Fletcher's Patent valve gear, where the gear is driven from eccentrics on the FRONT axle, and being folded back on itself at the expansion links. This was a (not very successful) attempt to achieve a reasonably long wheelbase on small 0-4-0 locomotives by placing the rear axle behind the firebox, thereby preventing the use of the rear axle for driving the (inside) valve gear. I can speak from bitter experience that this results in an arrangement which is almost impossible to lubricate or adjust unless you are a contortionist, and then only with the aid of a pit!
I had until recently thought that this design was a uniquely British valve gear, but have recently discovered that the arrangement was also used by Porter, for use in mines (yes - steam locomotives working underground!). See
