waste disposal on the rr

The potty humor in the outift car thread has prompted me to ask a question that well is pretty gross, but on the human side of rr-ing. Most of us I guess are aware that toilets on the NG from probably the first time a train covered any distance were just a seat on a tube dumping on the row. I can remember riding to Silverton as a kid and getting a kick out of looking at the ties going by down through the seat of ease. So what did the lowly section hands think of this? I find it surprising that there wasn't some sort of out cry for a better way. I am posting this as a serious thread.
