Gang - As part of the crew that returned the 481 to service in 1981, I can assure you that it was never trucked to Denver or anywhere else since it arrived in Durango from Alamosa by rail.
I have looked at the photograph in question many times. Even though it is difficult to read the number, it is a K-37.
The other locomotives that were trucked from Alamosa to Durango where, 480,493,498 and 499. The 498 went to the Royal Gorge when swapped with the 486.
I have always guessed that since the last number "1" is visable and that it is a K-37, that it indeed is the 491 on the trip north to Golden.
Hopefully Fred when he stops by for a look will prove me right!
