The steam Donkey engine were on the waterfront and also at sea in the lumber schooner days.

they loaded and unloaded the cargos, hoisted the anchors and the sails and generally moved what ever was heavy around the ships and waterfront.

At the San Francisco Maritime Park we have three of them. One of them is operational on low pressure. Fire that baby up (we use scrap wood from the carpenter shop) and people sure do gather around.
