The C&TS commission is looking to remove (discard, eg.deaccessioned) RR equipment that can not be maintained. Since the in person meeting (April) didn't get notice of the meeting out to the public within 72 hours, no votes of any kind were taken in the April meeting. The meeting below contains the official comments and votes regarding the equipment (along with a few other minor items). I have never done a report for special meetings. Until that changes, the video is available. Please understand, this is is step ONE of several following steps.
The video below is about 12 minutes long:

I'm noodling around in the middle of a cornfield, along the abandoned line of the old Toronto Grey & Bruce NG railway in Ontario. Have come across an 1874 wreck/derailment site. Included amongst the usual square nails, journal box lid bits etc, are a few of these spikes. Very slender and nominally about 8" in length. A lot of you folks restore old rly cars, can you verify that's where these would be from. I can't see any track jewelry use for them.

I came across this plaque in the Bear Creek Greenbelt near my house a while back, I neglected to take any photos for some reason, but I took a screenshot from Google Streetview. I can tell you the outline of what it said, it was something like "To the Pacific! came the cries of the brave men and women of Lakewood who helped build the Denver, South Park & Pacific Railway." If anyone has further info about this, that'd be great, thanks!

In the spring of 1999, SVRR's W.H. Eccles #3 wood burning Heisler was transported to Sacramento, Ca. for Railfair 1999. The engine had been under restoration which had to be accelerated to get it ready for the trip. In this shot taken at South Baker, she was loaded on the heavy hauling truck ready to go. Some of the folks that got her ready posed with her. This shot tugs at my heart strings, that is chokes me up just a bit, because the man with the red hat is our long time late friend Jim Grigsby who passed away the end of last week. When this photo was taken, Jim had just finished reassembling the wiring on the engine for the head lights and cab lights. I had helped with #3's reassembly but was not there for the loading. Likely during those reassembly work sessions is when I first met Jim and his wife Laura. In the photo to the right of Jim is Matt Mattioda who donated the set of photos this is from to our SVRR Archive. In the blue green T shirt to the right of Matt is the late Jim Lethlean. Moving right, the next gentleman might be the late Nils Christensen, next person unknown and then the late Ron Brinton. The guy furthest right is another unknown.

I'm probably not helping a previous thread, and I apologize for that.

So, I thought I had better start a different thread.

I was on the Charter in May of 2014 before the season started, that began in Antonito on day one and finished in Antonito on Day three.

I feel somewhat lousy that the fellow who spearheaded this trip didn't get full payment to the operators of D&RGW 315, which was the main power for all of our three days.

But that isn't what I was bringing to light in this conversation.

The idea of having a form of Rail Camp on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic RR as far as I know hasn't been explored.

Coming close to it would have been CHAMA STEAM X(10) which gave the patrons the opportunity to rough it back out in the woods of Osier. Well sort of.

The last night we stayed there in Osier the wind blew so hard that the rafters were crackling under that pressure.

But I tell you the night scenes of 315 up against a backdrop of stars and an original water tower were some of the most spectacular images that I have ever taken.

To think we had the railroad in the palm of our hands, is a pretty close description, at least the Right of Way wherever we were.

I for one would be up to a stay out on a siding anywhere on that line east of Cumbres, Cumbres included.

I have walked on my own much of the right of way in the past and photographed some of the culverts along the line that are buried in years and years of dried mud soil.

Then there are some areas where the culverts very rarely see any water drainage and are as pristine as the day they were constructed, some of them out of timbers some, hewed out of rock.

The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic RR still ranks in the top for me as the most authentic piece of American past as is out there for mountain railroading.

Glad though am I to see it revitalized rather than the way it looked in 2004.

Wouldn't it be fun to work the way they did in 1881 constructing the line, but cleaning out some of the culverts that need some attention, triming trees and staying in the backwoods for a week or 2?

1) What is the purpose of the snow shed on the tail of the Cumbres wye? Obviously, it's to keep the snow off the track but why would
you need a snow shed at this location? I think the Rio Grande Southern had a similar shed on one of its wyes.

2) In the winter, how would you plow all three sides of the wye? You can do two sides with little or no problem but for the third side
the plow would be facing the wrong way. How was the snow removed from the third side?

Good evening,

I am currently knee-deep into research on the work flatcars/gondolas of the D&RGW. #06051 and #06084 are some of my favorite flatcar modifications, but I realize I don't know much about aside from the surface-level material. (even after searching through of A Century + Ten and NG Pictorial Vol.X!) Sloan writes that #06051 was based out of Alamosa with the OP wreck train--so where was #06084 based out of?

Additionally, this car was in Chama in the late 60's and early 70's. Was it included in the sale to the states of CO/NM? What year did the Ashbys acquire it and move it to the loop? Is #06084 still owned by them, or owned by the Colorado Railroad Museum at this time?

The attached photo is from April 2026. The car has seen better days, but I still find it a fascinating prototype. Hope someone has the answers I'm looking for, thanks in advance!

This is an unidentified photo from the SVRR Archive Hardy Collection. Based on the car behind the engine, I conclude that the engine and its train are narrow gauge. The lettering on the standard gauge car to the left of the engine may be Southern Pacific. I wonder if this engine might be Southern Pacific narrow gauge #5 originally named "Belleville"?

July 1987. Rail camp was a boxcar modified into a cabin for weekly rental to folks who wanted to spend some time in the woods. The rental included a private train from Durango to the campsite at Cascade, and return. Sadly the service only lasted a few years. Anyone remembrer the details, maybe an inside image of the car? I would have loved to have taken advantage of it, but it would have been a hard sell to convince my better half.

Looks to have been there during the late 1940s and then removed.

I’m in the planning stages for building a model of the depot for my outdoor layout and might include this little oddity.

I am wondering if anyone knows about, and may have photos of, the London, South Park, & Leadville Railway, and its successor line, The South Park & Leadville Short Line Railroad. I’ve found very little on both lines, with just the information that it went from London Junction, later Alma Junction, to the London Mills. I also have the information that the LSP&L went from 1883-1885 and the SP&LSL went from 1885 to 1899. Besides that, I can’t find anything else on it. Would anyone know a good site, and or has more information, for these little railroads?

I have the book "Tracking Ghost Railroads in Colorado" and I was shocked as to how many lines there were that I never even knew of. Thanks for the help!

On May 3, 1926, newly built K-36 class locomotive 489 was heading down grade from Cumbres to Chama. The locomotive was returning to Chama from helper duty with a caboose in tow. As the engine navigated a series of S-curves just west of Cresco, near Milepost 336.2, 489 hit a broken rail, and rolled down a steep hillside taking her crew with her. Fireman Joe Dalla was seriously injured, and Engineer Roy Crutcher/Kretcher(?) was killed. (I’m unsure of the spelling of the engineer’s name as multiple newspapers have different spellings.) Miraculously, the caboose remained on the rails. Newspaper accounts described the event in great detail.

While Engineer Kretcher lost his life that day, Joe Dalla would go on to serve the Rio Grande for many more years. He would also go on to have several other harrowing experiences on the hill, but that's a story for another day.

This is just one of many wrecks that occurred on Cumbres Pass over the decades. Lately, I have been researching many of these and have successfully been able to line up some newspaper articles to some images in the Friends photo collections. In other cases, I have found many news stories of other wrecks that I had never even heard of. While pinpointing accuracy to location on some of these accounts has proven challenging, the sheer number of accidents on the hill is incredible. It goes without saying, Mr. Kretcher was only one of many lives that where lost on Cumbres Pass. As the research continues, I didn't want today to pass without acknowledging the sacrifices so many railroaders made to keep our favorite narrow gauge line alive and running. Then, now, and forever...

Was exploring a long-abandoned CPR railway line near me yesterday and ran across this. It's about the size of a pin I have from a link & pin coupler, but doesn't have the same wide collar. And that's a dimple, not a hole through the top, so it's not the lifting pin from a knuckle coupler. I doubt the stamping will be a help, but you never know.
Anyone seen railway pins like this?

Long time SVRR member Jeff Chittick was one of the guys that worked on the restoration of Sumpter Valley Ry. #19. He was also SVRR's road foreman of engine for a period, meaning he was in charge of qualification and training on the engines. He made up a set of slides for training purposes for #19 which I have been sharing from time to time. Here is one of the cross head and valve gear. Note the mechanical lubricator operated off of the valve gear. This and one on the other side were upgrades added to the engine over the years. The one seen here on the fireman's side pumps journal oil to the cross heads and journal boxes, relieving the engineer or hostler a lot of the effort in oiling around. The one on the other side handles steam oil for the piston valves and cylinder replacing a hydrostatic lubricator in the cab. The scan is from the SVRR Archive.
