62 years ago today - 488 and 473 between Alamosa and Antonito- June 11 and 12, 1964 (no replies)

On June 12, 1964, engine 473 was coupled to 7 passenger cars at the Alamosa depot, ready to depart for Durango on a deadhead move. Engine 473 had been in the Alamosa shops for 5 months and was returning to service on this run. She had made the run from Durango to Alamosa over three days, running Durango-Chama on December 26, 1963, making two Cumbres turns with 498 on December 27, and running Chama-Alamosa on December 28.

The passenger cars had come from Durango the day before, as the consist of the Illini Railroad Club special behind 488. Here are a few pacing shots of 488 and the Illini special racing along the 3-rail track between Antonito and Alamosa at a good 30 mph and likely a bit more. My Cambodian college roommate Leo Sopheantha was driving my 1959 Mercury and I was hanging out of the passenger window with my obsolete Agfa box camera that I used for the last time on this day.

The counterweights were spinning around in a blur, but fireman Shawcroft seemed entirely relaxed on this slightly downhill run

It is almost the end of the day's run as the train passes the narrow gauge departure yard

SVRy #17 At Larch (1 reply)

In this shot, we have Sumpter Valley Ry. mike #17 west bound at Larch. Larch was the summit on Huckleberry Mtn. between the Sumpter Valley and the Burnt River side of the mountain. The max grade west bound on the Sumpter Valley side was just over 4%, so it is quite likely that they would need to at the least double the grade, meaning bring up one cut of cars and go back to S Wye in the Sumpter Valley and couple up to another cut, then reassemble the train at the small yard at Larch. In this shot, it may be that one cut has already been brought up that is the background. Note the brakeman on the back of the tender probably getting ready to cut off from that cut of cars. The engineer in this photo looks very much like long time SVRy engineer Ulysses Sylvester "Vet" Carpenter. He is often referred to as U.S. Carpenter. He son Floyd was the Sumpter Valley's master mechanic for many years. As to dating the photo, #17 was equipped with the Rushton smoke stack in 1927 and was converted to oil in 1940. I initially typed this date range, but realized that this photo looked familiar from another collection. It was taken in Oct. of 1939 by Walter Grande. #17 was purchased new in 1915, and retired in 1944. She was sold to the government of Peru the following year and operated in the country at least into the 1970's. Final disposition is unknown. The scan is from the SVRR Archive.

The swiss RhB naroow gauge (1m) railroad is well known for it‘s spectacular mountain scenery. Rather unknown is that it does have quite a lot of street running in the City of Chur (the capital of the Canton Grison). I found an interesting video on Youtube which shows interesting scenes with passenger, mixed (!) and freight trains in the streets of Chur. It shows how a modern NG RR still is useful to carry freight and passenger…

487 Fails to pull a 9 car consist over Cumbres Pass for opening day. (42 replies)

Today I learned that on opening day for the Cumbres and Toltec this year 487, despite 2 attempts failed to get her train over the Grade.
488 and 489 were fired up, they did a double header to Cumbres, 489 continued on her own, the train eventually arrived in Antonito after dark.

Does anyone know why 487 struggled up Cumbres Pass or why the railroad didn't do a doubleheader in the first place. Last year I saw 484 take an 8 car train up the grade with ease. I have heard that 487 is known to be a poor steamer.

COMO ROUNDHOUSE ACQUISTION
EFFORT UPDATE – Tom Lawson

WE DID IT! THANKS to the vast support of South Park Rail
Society members and Supporters and with the successful awarding of a HISTORY
COLORADO funding grant we raised the $400,000 to purchase the historic Como
Roundhouse from Kathy and Dr Charles Brantigan.

We closed on the sale Tuesday June 9 at First American Title in Golden. Closing
were Kathy and Dr Charles Brantigan, Bill Kazel, the person who originally
saved the Como Roundhouse, Norm Acker, President of the SPRS, Tom Lawson VP /
Treasurer of SPRS and Lisa Comito, Escrow Officer, First American Title.
After a three year effort orchestrated by one very focused perseverant individual; to agree
on a sales price, terms, fundraising, grant application process and the
co-operation of Kathy and Dr. Chuck Brantigan for their efforts to keep the
Como Roundhouse preservation effort alive helping to organize an organization
to take procession, and finally a closing. This culmination of efforts called
for a celebration lunch at Mickey’s Sirloin in Denver, with Dr. Charles and
Kathy Brantigan, Tom Lawson, Paul Blanchard, SPRS Volunteer Coordinator / Life
Member and Bill Kazel, supporter.
This is a very important chapter of the Como Heritage Site that the historic Como Roundhouse
is now in ownership of the non-profit South Park Rail Society dedicated to the
ongoing preservation and insuring its long term viability on behalf of the
general public to appreciate the history of an operating narrow gauge heritage
site. It is also important to the dedicated Volunteers who have toiled,
sacrificed and devoted their time to restore this Heritage Site and provide the
general public open houses and educational experiences that they now have a an
equity and pride of ownership as stakeholders.
We move on to the next chapter, acquisition of the pasture that surrounds the Como
Roundhouse, Como Depot and the Como Hotel.

Earlier today I ran into a picture of the absolute abomination that is what the city of Alamosa at one point did to 169. That is put a flying Rio Grande lettering on the tender.

In the late spring of 1976, most of the restoration work was completed by SVRR volunteers on the WH Eccles #3 Heisler. This work was performed down in Baker, Oregon. The next step was to haul the engine up to the Sumpter Valley and unload it on to track that had been prepared for its arrival. Someone told me many years ago that the engine was fired up and moved off of the trailer under steam. This shot backs that up. It looks like there may be a whiff of smoke coming out the stack and it looks like the water tank is being filled with a portable pump. The guys up on the engine with the long board were no doubt lifting low hanging telephone wires so they could pass under. More than likely this photo was taken within a few days give or take of 50 years ago. The first passenger operation was July 4th 1976. Appropriate, as we begin celebrating 50 years of SVRR operations starting this coming weekend. The scan is from the SVRR Archive.
When steam engines were built many years ago, coal was the primary fuel. Of course because of the potential danger of starting fires from engine exhaust, oil later replaced coal.
The next chapter of the restoration of D&RGW locomotive 223 has begun. Yesterday June 8th, 2026, 223 Locomotive Foundation president Jimmy Booth along with additional director John Bush, and a few folks from the Golden Spike Chapter successfully loaded 223s cab, pilot/pilot beam, and tender on a low boy trailer bound for Durango.

While it may not be as exciting as moving the frame and boiler, it all has to be moved at some point and these are some of the easier of the larger components to move. We were also able to get a deal on the trucking as the truck was already on its way to Durango to load up D&RGW 340.

Speaking of 223s boiler and frame, plans are already being made to move them in the next month or so. As I am writing this D&RGW 223 is being unloaded off the trailer so D&RGW 340 can be loaded up.
