Earlier this week, the DSP&P Historical Society shared the news that a former White Pass & Yukon car will be coming to Como. The thought was that the move would happen today. It's an exciting addition to Como. Now they will not only have boxcars, gondolas, and a stock car, but a tank car as well.

Hard to believe how high and strong the Animas was running today. Unfortunately, the water temporarily topped the tracks in the valley (and apparently damaged a number of homes, as well). In downtown Durango, the river had nearly reached the bottom of the bridge (and seemed to have washed a deer carcass onto the beams, where it remained stuck). Still more rain in the forecast. Can't imagine what things look like up in the more narrow sections of the canyon right now. My thoughts are with everyone who lives and works in the area and their safety first and foremost. There's going to be a lot of work ahead once the river goes back down...

So, a few weeks ago, I came across this photo in the book, "Rio Grande Steam Finale" (Or at least I think it was) and came across this picture that intrigued me. [attachment 105482 IMG_0618-Edited1.jpg][attachment 105481 IMG_0620.jpeg]I noticed one of the boxcars didn't have Rio Grande style font on it and after a closer look it looks like it says South Park and DSP&P. For more context, it says this photo was taken in 1963, almost 65 years since the South Park existed. On top of that, the Rio Grande did not buy any South Park car equipment (That I'm aware of). While I do have some possible thoughts, I would love if somebody knew what's going on here or has any information on this, thank you.

Jerry's pictures HERE of the current flooding in the lower Animas Valley are a good example of a picture being worth a thousand words, or some such. Thanks.

I seem to remember that this area was historically prone to flooding in DRGW days, and at some point either the DRGW or the D&S raised the track. In 1965 it looked like this (without flooding):

[attachment 105467 DRGWsilbrchworktrainvalley1102.jpg]

I'm wondering if anyone here remembers when the track was raised, how much, and how big a project it was. In the lower picture you can see piles of ballast along the track that suggest maybe the DRGW had already started the process of trying to get the track out of the mud. The fact that the raised track is still flooding suggests just how serious the flooding is this year.

These uniform buttons are from the SVRR Archive Harr Collection. IIRC we have even more of them from other sources including some I bought off of Ebay and donated. Most or all of these are probably original buttons made by Waterbury Button Co. and were in use once upon a time on the original Sumpter Valley Ry. conductor's uniforms. However, Waterbury is still in business having been founded in 1812 and will still make you a set of these buttons. I know some SVRR members ordered some in the last few years, so now I wonder how many of the ones that are out there are actually ones that have been made in the modern day? Incidentally, the stylized saw blade logo on the buttons is where the similar logo comes from that has been used on modern merchandise such as hats and t-shirts.

Enjoyed a couple of unique nights of photography out on the Silverton Branch with a whole lot of familiar faces on this year's Durango & Silverton Fall Photo train. Big thanks to Pete Lerro and all the volunteers who helped get the lights set up and broken down (no easy feat in the rain and cold) and to everyone at the D&S who made it possible for us to experience the railroad in a new way. Standing on the back platform of the caboose watching steam and smoke drift off into a sky full of stars and snowcapped peaks was certainly something I won't forget anytime soon.

Does anyone know which C&TS K-36 is most likely to be used for the upcoming Lerro Photography charter? Some friends and I think it may be 487 considering its past charter use, recent assignments to the Chama side and its large “Perma-Plow.” However, 488 or 489 could also be candidates given their updated appearances this season.

On the topic of the new look, does anyone know if the silver smokebox fronts and tricolor heralds are here to stay? Are there any plans to give 487 the same treatment? I’ve only heard good things about the new look and I personally hope they keep it around.

As if this afternoon, the NWS is predicting that the San Juan in Pagosa Springs is predicted to peak 1' higher than it did in October 2025, a flood event that caused over $1 million in damages in Archuleta County.

The Durango Weather Guy reports that the NWS is predicting the Animas River to almost but not quite hit flood stage in downtown Durango.

Peak for the Animas, San Juan, Rio Blance, Navajo and Piedra rivers is expected tomorrow.

Trains are the primary mode of transportation in Bangladesh. They have a dual-gauge system.
In some of the videos you can see dual-gauge trackage. The narrow gauge is one meter, and
there is lots of it!

They are still delivering train orders by hoop! Lots of manual signalling.

If you are into safe railroading, don't watch!!! I find it fascinating!

Hello all,

For the last year or so, I have been mired in a long-term project of trying to model the D&RGW's 6200 flatcars in their pre-rebuild appearance. Few photos exist and, to my knowledge so far, very little in the way of drawings. If I could dissuade my year-ago self from embarking on this errand, I probably would, but that's neither here nor there. I set off in late October 2025 with OP-9201 from DPL and the pre-rebuild folio on pg. 115 of R.E. Sloan's "A Century + Ten", and here's where we are today!

There are several details still left to model--wrapping up the brake rigging, retainer valve and associated piping, the knuckles and coupler cutbars, etc. But I feel the model itself is at the point where I can share it for feedback purposes. The model is made entirely in the free game modeling software, Blender, and uses some clever rendering tricks to mimic a CAD line drawing. Everything except the text (Even the dimension and extension lines!) are made in Blender. Outlines are applied to all geometry when rendering the scene in an orthographic view, which produces the effect. Because this process is automatic, you may see a few artifacts, which I will squash when I am completely done with the model by manually assigning every edge and vertex to receive an outline or not. (very time-consuming...) I am also not a draftsman by any means, so apologies in advance for any visual unappeal in my presentation or dimensions.

As for the details, the bolster is wrong, and I need to plan a trip to DPL to dig for the correct card for it--as it is unique to these cars after their 1925 rebuild. I also still have not addressed the center sill splice, for lack of information, and the need to look into the D&RGW's 'standard' practice before making an educated guess. I have also recycled hardware from the post-1937 6200s (Brake rig, queen posts, etc.) where applicable, as seems to be the case based on the photos I have seen.

What about #06202 as the Salida block car? #06213 as a tank car outfit in the early 50s? All in due time, I hope! If you have any suggestions, feedback, or unpublished photos of the prototypes, I'd be happy to discuss or add them to the reference folder. This is very much still WIP, and I have plenty of time to change/fix things. The model will be somewhat suitable for 3D printing or train simulators with a little optimization.

Lastly, I'd like to give a special thanks to Jeff Smith. His and Jim Schmit's drawings over on Branchline Products are fantastic and pulled their weight and then some--filling countless gaps in dimensions I had for various hardware and generally comparing to the post-1937 rebuilds. He has freely let me access his extensive knowledge of cars on the Rio Grande, (and his home) on my cross-country travels for research trips, and for that I will be forever grateful.

Thanks as well to Casey Akin, William Reed, Brett Wiebold, Kyle Danielson, Christian Dvorak, and many others for spitballing with me and letting me blab their ears off about these cars; your help, encouragement, and individual expertise have been invaluable in my endeavors. Keep nipping at my heels, and it might get done even sooner! :D

Keep it cool and classy,

Generally, I have confined scanning of our SVRR Archive material to photos, but here and there we have some paper items that are scanned. This scan applies to Sumpter Valley Ry. engines 2nd #1 and 2nd #2. These two engines were built in 1901 for the Chateauqay Railroad in New York State, but were diverted to the Tonopah Railroad in Nevada. The Chateaguay Railroad had been purchased by the Delaware & Hudson in 1901 after which the line was converted to std. gauge, so that may be the reason for the initial cancelled order and sale to the Tonopah. The Tonopah itself was converted to standard gauge in 1905, make them again surplus. These are two of the engines in the photo and sales invoice I shared a few days ago. They served the Sumpter Valley Ry. very well, with #1 retired in 1934, lasting the longest often in passenger service. #2 was retired in 1930. The trucks and tender frame of #1 have survived and are at SVRR's McEwen yard. Sadly the wooden frame had completely rotted in two. How it survived at all is a story for another post.

I am looking for any information on how the Denver Pacific 4-4-0s were painted as a reference for a future modeling project. I can't find many photos of the locomotives online, aside from some post-DP photos, or what paint schemes they wore. I am specifically doing DP 27 or 28; I haven't decided yet, but it will likely depend on the photos, since they are extremely similar to the Bachmann 4-4-0s. Anything helps, and I will likely post updates as I build this model.

I'm a little late to the party since most everyone here knows we repainted 491 after we finished her new tender cistern. This new scheme is an update to her 1956 appearance complete with genuine D&RGW flag box and her actual dual gauge coupler pocket both courtesy of the C&TS.

This first Photo is basically our debut photo. This is as clean as she will ever be.
The second a third photo are a fun comparison and showcases the lower tender number.
Oh and here is a link to a historic photo with the brake club in the coupler pocket. We love details like that, plus it is a convenient place to keep a brake club.

On October 16th, I found myself in McEwen, Oregon with a ticket to ride the Stump Dodger's fall colors train. It was a beautiful morning with a slight nip in the air. I, personally, have never been out to this little operation before so this was a real treat to get to see in person. It was also an opportunity to try out a new camera. I arrived with plenty of time to walk around and take pictures of the sights. It was hard to nail down which pictures to choose for a single post so this will be a three-parter.

I have always liked the square water tower. It's tiny in comparison to the Rio Grande's standard water tank. Speaking of the Grande, there's a 3000 series boxcar in the background.

This NCO coffin tank car was neat to see having only seen models of it.

We could hear the crew getting the train ready near their backshops and watched them as they pulled out onto the main and shoved into the depot.

Brakemen on point.

The conductor gave his safety schpeal from one of the open cars, an ex-White Pass & Yukon Route 1000 series container flat, to a crowd of eager people. I was one of the last ones to get in line to board the train and was suprised to find that no one wanted to ride in caboose 3. How could one refuse such an offer? The train crew had the wood burning stoves lit in all the cars which was welcome in both warmth and scent. I happily placed myself in a cupola seat. The younger of the two brakeman on board acted as the tour guide for the caboose as there was no transfer plate connecting it to the rest of the consist.

As we departed, I snapped a picture of Sumpter Valley Railway caboose 5 from the cupola.

years back, this original SVRy marker lamp was donated to SVRR. It is generally intact, but I see in this photo that there are a couple of small holes in the top. No idea what that is about unless somebody electrified it at some point. It is one of five that I am aware of that have survived, which is amazing since the railroad probably didn't have too many sets. One of the interesting things about this and some other original Adlake items is that the soldered on tag is "SVRR" instead of SVRy as you would expect.
"Self," I thought, "that looks like a railroad grade" and so it was. I didn't find much info about it, though I tramped the public lands around where the Lehigh coal deposit should be, but today trying to determine if the town of Danville was the same as the town of Lehigh I found these two pieces that may be of interest.
From photos from this and last season she seems to be producing a lot of black smoke for an oil burner, I’m by no means an expert but I believe black smoke just means bad combustion. Also does 487 still have lifting injectors?

Are there any driving guides/map guides to follow the right of way/get me to those locations? Not sure where to start, it'll be my first time trying to follow the railroad and I'm eager to see as much as I can. Thank you!

Hey folks, I’m thinking about coming down to Durango / RGS Land sometime this winter for family things. A couple questions: Where are some good locations on the former RGS to visit in the winter? Are the Cascade trips on the D&S ever doubleheaded, or just some of the Silverton runs in the summer months? What's the snow forecast this year look like and when would be the best time to go to see snow up there? Also, is there anywhere up there any of you’d recommend going in general? Thanks in advance!
