A Polychromacolor print taken in 1940 on the backlot of the "America! Cavalcade of a Nation" pageant at the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco, California. The narrow-gauge locomotive and combine stood in for the long ago scrapped Union Pacific 119 and the train in a wildly fanciful and inaccurate version of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869.

Built in 1879, the little 2-6-0 "Mogul" type was turned out by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, construction number 4562, and was delivered to the Utah & Northern carrying the number 13. She later joined the roster of the Nevada Short Line as their number 1, and finished her working career on the Nevada Central Railroad as their number 6. The combine she is coupled to is even older, having been built by Carter Brothers in 1874 for the Monterey & Salinas Valley, though most of her career was spent on the Nevada Central Railroad. In 1938 the exposition acquired four pieces of equipment for the pageant, all from the Nevada Central Railroad, and a quick overhaul and paint job got them somewhat functional for their stage debut.

When the show ended in 1940, the equipment was donated to the Pacific Coast Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society, and while they languished for decades, they can now be found beautifully refurbished and on display at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, California.

Enjoy, Taylor

"I hate it when that happens" about sums it up. This photos shows reconstruction of a burned out trestle on the Sumpter Valley Ry. I think it is interesting that the old rail is still hanging in place as they began reframing the structure. I guess it provided a pretty clear guide to alignment. We don't have a date or location for this, but it might be Kight's trestle between Dixie and Prairie City as we know that one burned at some point. The scan is from the SVRR Archive.
I am hoping to find this information so I can know its condition, where it's located, and if there is the possibility of it being moved to Colorado.
I have seen two models of the car, and they're both different as to the location of the tie box. One car has it off to one side using the side stake holes for one side of the box. The other model has the tie box right in the middle of the car. I really can't tell which one is correct. Please help!

New builds of the Gilpin Tramway equipment (9 replies)

After much thought and the years of research I've done into the Gilpin, plus the fact that we don't have any surviving pieces of actual equipment as a whole, I wonder if the possibility of doing new builds of a couple of the G-T's equipment would be reasonable. We have the C&S Folios from 1906 of most of the equipment; not to add on, people have made diagrams based on photos we have for cars we don't have C&S Folios of, such as the excursion cars. Most of these cars are between 17' and 20' with a few being at most 23' and at least 13' in length. This also brings up the possibility of doing a new build of at least one of the locomotives, which #1 "Gilpin." would be the best because of its fairly compact size; however, it would be more feasible to just rebuild some of the rolling stock.

I brought this up as an idea since we, again, don't have any actual pieces of equipment saved at all, unless you count the decrepit remains of #3's stack at the CRRM. It would be nice to have something more of this railroad be remembered at a museum, such as CRRM, and have something that can have physical ties to the Gilpin, even if it's just a new build of one of the ore cars.

I would love to see what everyone and anyone thinks of this idea, considering this is Colorado's only 2ft railroad, which wasn't a part of a larger mining complex and was an actual railroad to some degree.

Does anyone have photos of it from before the repaint? I’m trying to model the headlight with its pinstriping, but none of the scenes in Denver & Rio Grande show it clearly enough. If I’m remembering right, the locomotives in the movie also had their numbers painted on with the pinstriping.

I am posting as I might hope there is good use for these items. To a railroad restoration group transfer will be an outright donation, individual negotiable.

The American Tool Company lathe is big. 18" faceplate and 100" from spindle to bed end. Has faceplate, 4 jaw and 3 jaw chucks, 6" steady rest, taillstock, and other accessories. Should be big enough to machine an axle. Appears in good condition. The person I acquired it from stated it was running but they did not need it.

Caboose stove was used by previous owner as a trash heater. Mostly S.P.Co casting numbers with the feet being CP.

Pedestal grinder started to lose power. Unknown if this is motor or switch issue but we no longer needed to use it. Its big and if you need face grinding a nice tool to have.

The generator set is WW2 surplus, then Fire department surplus. has a Willys motor which was rebuilt 30-40 years ago and not run since. We never used it.

Located near Portland Oregon. I have a forklift to load items if there are any takers.

This is a photo of the turntable pit outside the west portal of Alpine Tunnel. I don't know the date as I purchased it in a collection from eBay. It's obviously post-1910 (when the line ceased operation). My guess is the 1950s. I'm curious if anyone has seen the strange upturned rail thing elsewhere. It appears that this was meant to keep a locomotive that had just been spotted on the turntable from rolling off the other end. Does that sound plausible?
Very cool to see 315 up in Golden and seeing her side by side with her sister 318. I also want to give credit to the CRRM for making 491 look as accurate as she did back in the 50s and 60s from when she had 496's tender. It's a very nice replica of the original tender that's up in Antonito.

These little flat cars seem to be the subject of conversation once a year or so and they are facinating things. More so that there are at least four still in existence (one in Skagway, three at Taku Landing from what I've seen). After many hours scouring the internet, I have yet to see is any sort of origin story besides that they came from Tanana Mines Railway. I can only assume they were either built in house or manufactured at a car builder in the lower 48.

The historic photo is out of the book "The Iron Horse come to the Klondike" by Eric L. Johnson. Facinating read, but the way. I do appreciate that a Mr. J. Robinson measured and drew this one in 1974. If I get the motivation, I'll get my own tape out and measure the hardware on it.

This is what the one in Skagway looks like as of two seasons ago when I first came up. It's condition hasn't changed much since then. Another thing to note is that the castings on this flat have no evidence of origin. Initials and part numbers are nowhere to be found. Again, I'll look harder next time I'm over there.

You might not see narrow gauge content in this shot, so let me help you out. Look distant in the photo and you will see a raised rail bed with a phone line running along side. I believe that is the Sumpter Valley Ry. mainline headed off the right up Bridge Cr. to Prairie City. The construction we see is of the big Oregon Lumber Co. mill at what was initially called Batesville, later shorted to Bates, Or. Date wise, this shot was likely taken in 1918 as I think the mill opened in 1919. The Oregon Lumber Co. constructed a narrow gauge logging mainline of about 20 miles down the Middle Fork of the John Day River to supply the mill with logs. The scan is from the SVRR Archive.

Last Wednesday, Craig Konklin & myself met up in Oakhurst and went out to the California Lumber Company & Madera Flume & Trading Company woods. These two companies were the predecessors of Madera Sugar Pine. Our first stop was to locate California Lumber Company Mill #1 which was located at Gooseberry Flat and operated from 1874-1878. The mill's output was used to build the first flume which was completed in early 1877. Unfortunately, California was affected by an extreme drought and there was no demand for lumber. By the spring of 1878 the California Lumber Company was bankrupt. The mill site is just off Sky Ranch road and a check of the area showed some minor artifacts & ground scars that indicated the general location of the mill & flume. The photo below from the Madera Historical Society Collection is possibly a photo of this mill. It matches the topography of the area:

This is a photo of the same general area today:

Next we drove up to Soquel Meadow. This was the site of Madera Flume & Trading Company's mill from 1881 - 1893. MF&T succeeded California Lumber in 1878 and brought fresh capital & talent into the operation. The new mill was constructed using equipment from Soquel, California (near Santa Cruz). I had visited this area last fall, but wanted to try and find more of the railroad grade that Betsy had used. Here is a photo of Soquel Mill in operation with Betsy & a log train:

There were Lidar map indications that a railroad grade may have transversed the upper end of Soquel Meadow. Here's a photo of the meadow with Fresno Dome in the background:

I had placed a pin onto my phone's maps of the location I wanted to check, but when we were out in the woods I could not get the pin to load. The end result was about 45 minutes of tromping around a beautiful meadow, but no railroad grade found. I later determined we were very close to the desired location so we'll have to make another trip. Being spring in the Sierra, there were many beautiful flowers blooming including this snow plant:
