Here are some of the photos of the pile of driving wheel centers at the Longleaf mill. The ones with the slot around the wheel are from an 1883 Baldwin 2-6-0, and the ones with a solid circumference are from a 1919 Baldwin 2-6-2.
If you study the first photo, you can see that the slots are not exactly in the same spot in the wheel nor are the spokes braces across the slot in the same place nor are they the same size, meaning that a different pattern was used for each wheel center. At least on #20, in Linn's picture, it seems like the slots are all the same and the cross bracing the same also.

Chris and Richie were very careful to measure each and every patch, dent and wrinkle on the original to duplicate it as best we could. We even left out the bolts/.rivdets in the upper coal doors as per the original. One of the more difficult challenges was to ensure that we were only replicating pre-museum work which often times overlapped original patches. While the later work was all welded, there were some curious anomolies, one of which was an internal riveted patch. It appears as a seemingly unnecessary row of rivets on the exterior of the shell. Upon examination we discovered the remains of an internal patch. So if someone asks why there is a short horizontal row of rivets and no visible patch - that is the reason.

I cannot offer an expert opinion on the driving wheels. I can only say that I have seen everything from this style to solid to cored spokes and seemingly every variation imaginable. It may have to do with railroad preference which was not always rooted in sound engineering practice, or it may have to do with the foundry practice and preference of the time. The latter seems more likely. You'll notice that the rims are divided into sections which was common around the turn of the century. It seems likely that this was because of the differential cooling rates of the larger hub and counterweight sections compared to the thinner spokes and rim though I had one good present day foundryman tell me it would make matters worse. Our new wheels are cast with chills in place in the larger sections which allows a more even cooling and shrinkage throughout the casting. I have not seen signs of these in old wheels I've looked at.

At SFHM we have driver centers from an 1883 Baldwin 2-6-0 that are constructed the same way as #20's driver centers. The interior cross braces in rim of the wheel are at the spokes and also 1/2 way in between them. #20's look like they are the same way. The next oldest set of driver centers that we have, the entire rim is a solid piece, and those date from around 1913. I have wondered why the difference between the two for a long time, so Linn if you have a good answer, we can surely pass it on. I have always suspected that it was either metallurgy or casting processes, but I would love to have an expert answer.

Linn...I do want to ask you something on the drive wheels. I see there is some sort of cross bracing every 6 inches or so around the wheel, but they do not correspond to the main wheel bracing (going from the center of the wheel outwards). I was under the impression that the wheels were all one machined piece. If this is correct, why is there the cross bracing?

Might be a dumb question, but I've never noticed that before on the wheels without the tires on them.

We finished riveting the dome flange, doubler, and backhead brace shell feet. The majority of staybolt holes needing welded are finished. The mudring is being prepped for riveting once the firebox is in. Except for the front flue sheet, the shell is basically complete. The rear braces will be fit and installed permanently except for a few in the center to allow access to cover weld the crown sheet butt weld. Once the braces are installed, the firebox goes in.

Erich has finished the heavy machining on the new frame sections and has only to drill some holes before we are ready to fit the new sections in place.

Next week I will work on on of the cracked spokes to establish a repair procedure. Once established we will repair the rest of the wheels.

We will replace two axles that are undersize and with some questionable UT readings. #3 is OK.

John machined the R1 driving box and it came out well.

Old 1 and 2 axles. Note undersize of journals

#346 tender tank is complete and ready to go west. This was quite a job but it came out pretty nice. All stainless steel will ensure that the museum won't have to have a fundraising campaign in 20 years to repair or replace it. The bottom covers the entire frame so water in the coal space won't seep into the wood and rot it out like it did on the original. Hardware is original.
