Mike,

If memory serves me....which sometimes now it does not....there were 2 flat top baggage cars in Rico. Both were the same era as the one at Vance, now at the CRRM. Those cars were in rough condition, but still restorable. The outfit cars were the heart breaker. They were all there except the trucks. When Bob Shank jr found out I was going to get those cars, he confessed he had dug a hole under the one outfit cars, crawled under it, and took the triple valve off the air tank. He used it for the restoration of caboose 0524. He offered to find me a replacement, but as it turned out, I didn't need it. I did not get any parts off the cars. I was so sad that everything was "gone" that I just walked away. Back in the late 70's you could still go to Floyde Reed's scrap your outside of Alamosa, and get a pick-up load of scarp parts for $100.00. I had plenty of parts to restore the 5 cars I had....so like I said, I let the Rico cars go. They had been crushed and burned and a lot of the metal had ben taken, so it really was not worth it.

Any idea when the photos of the Ames trestle were taken? Several years before it blew down one of the bents had collapsed. It had to be pre 1970?. My son and I walked across it for the last time in the fall of 1980 (I think) It blew down in the spring of 1981 (again, I think) I've got a photo of that walk with aspens growing at least 10' above the spot where your photos were taken.
Thanks,

Here is the story on the Rico cars. Bob Shank got the cars from Vance Junction, but I was suppose to get the cars from Rico. The Rico Agrentine Mining Company was "cleaning up" the old Rico yards and mill tailings. I approched them about buying the outfit cars and baggage cars as well as the rail in the engine house. They told me if I hauled it all away, I could have it...including the water tower. I had asked the Mining company to give me 30 days to remove the equipment and they agreed. I arranged for a lowboy to haul the outfit cars and went to Rico to start jacking them up. One week after they agreed to give me 30 days, the cars had all been crushed with a bulldoser and burned. They were going to start on the water tower next but I convinced them to leave it standing if I put a fence around it. I was able to rescue MOST of the rail from the engine house. Part of it was stolen before I could move it all to my home near Grand Junction. It later years I sold the RGS/D&RGW equipment I had already restored. The 0400 is at the CRRM. The rail from the Rico engine house is being used at the Cross Orchards Living History Farm in Grand Junction as part of the Uintah restoration project.

The pictures of Rico and the remains of the enginehouse were shot in June 1973. I was on one of my exploring trips with Bob Shank Jr. and John Crawford. I was able to kick up a few Jeffrey spikes in the area. The rail was still in place inside the enginehouse and Bob Shank Jr. had just pulled 2 complete shop stoves out of the rubble a few weeks before. The Rico station was in a large pile, but again Bob was able to find one of the roof braces in the rubble. The photos of the trestle are along the highline. We were able to walk across at the time. I was back in the area a few weeks after the trestle collapsed in 1979 if I remember right. The photos of the miner's cabin and the large mill were back in La Plata Canyon. We had to hike in to get to them and I remember finding the cabin with dishes and a newspaper dated in the teens still on a table. John Crawford told me the mill was named the Gold King but I am not positive this was the actual name. The other photos are of Como in June 1974 and of Red Moutain with the remains of the Jail and the Yankee Girl. I haven't been back for at least 20 years but I don't imagine much is left.

The documents are interesting.....

Ahhh for the days when people wrote in a decent hand that
you could READ!

Most people cannot write in longhand (cursive) like that these
days....what a shame.

They taught us "Penmanship" in the first or second grade when I was a kid...circa 1949-52...I remember it was a pain in the butt, but I did learn to write so that people could READ it.

Decent pennmanship later really came in handy when I worked as a radiotelegraph operator and
didn't have a typewriter or "mill" to copy on all the time.

Now I take some pride in being able to write legibly when the "norm" for most people seems to be to scrawl and scribble to where no one can easily read it. Doctors and dentists seem to be the absolute worst!

Neither one of my kids signs their name so you can actually read it..
they just "make their mark", which somehow seems to be good enough.
I rag 'em about it sometimes.

Actually, #20's boiler was not that bad. She did well on the 1.25 hydro we gave her except for a couple flues. By the standards and capabilities of the RGS in 1951, she wasn't all that bad from a boiler standpoint. We condemned much of her firebox with the UT machine, which wasn't around in 1951. Fire cracking and staybolt hole stress cracking had been addressed by the RGS in a rather ugly but acceptable manner. We found more cracks but they would not have come through for awhile and the RGS would have just patched them the same way had they continued to operate. The biggest issue for us was the dented boiler which just wasn't a good thing, though it operated for eight years that way.

The machinery was serviceable but pretty tired. I don't think it tracked all that well with the drivers misaligned, but it probably mostly stayed on the rails.

Our goal is to bring #20 up to a very good state of repair so that it can be operated for many years with proper care, in a reliable manner. Personally, I wouldn't have been afraid to fire her up after the hydro and some miscellaneous tinkering. She probably would have run, more or less, for a little while before something broke. That was most likely a good state of repair for the RGS in 1951.

You can probably think of locomotives that were "rebuilt" over the past couple decades and ran for only a short time before they started to develop more problems and often ended up dead in a short while. This is what we want to avoid.

tractor,

Thanks for taking the time to set up these documents for posting – I can see where it would be time consuming. I really liked the “Locomotive Inspection Reports” pertaining to the Geese.

There are a couple that were filed by Motorman Jimmy Cooper that I found particularly interesting. First, the one about Motor (Goose) #5 that simply says “Check Brakes”. He probably just came down the 4% grade from Dallas Divide and wasn’t too pleased with the handling – or lack of. The other one I liked was from July, 1940 where he writes, “Left door about off.” It seems the Pierce Arrow bodies were beginning to show some pretty good wear way before the Wayne bus bodies were put on 3, 4 and 5 after WWII. (Of course, he might have been talking about the freight box door.)

Good stuff - Thanks again,

Larry

These are great! I see from the Daily Tie-Up Report from December of 1916 that the 40, 41 and 42 were still lettered and referred to as 402, 409 and 420, respectively. Also interesting is one of the last usages of engine 18, which was scrapped 12-31-16. Actually, I believe all the engines which had not been reboilered had to be off the roster before 1-1-17 so she may not have been 'worn out' in the strictest sense.

Also, I love that telegram from October 12, 1916 about the cattle at Pine Ridge. Any bets some stock cars were wrecked out there a day or two before and the cargo was on the mooooove?
